The Palola-Harriman Family

“To rest from travel, just find a hotel. But to grow from the journey, find a home where the journey’s shared with others.”

-Anonymous

We are Heidi Palola & Richard Harriman, American educators who left the USA to work, travel and raise our children Margaret & Griffin overseas.

All four of us designed and contributed to the construction of Villa Koukouvayia, and while Margaret (hospital administrator and weaver in Portland, Maine) and Griffin (music student in Boston, Mass) live in the states, they both rightfully consider Crete and Villa Koukouvayia their home, return to the island twice a year for long stays whenever their work allows. Heidi is a former middle school science teacher who loves hiking, music and working Villa Koukouvayia’s flower and vegetable gardens. Richard is a former high school English teacher, certified commercial sailing instructor, and amateur ice-hockey goalie who has made up for Crete’s lack of ice rinks by taking up long-distance running and alpine backpacking.

Now retired from teaching, we live year-round at Villa Koukouvayia with the villa’s dog (Logan) and cat (Oliver), hosting guests, managing the villa’s small olive farm, while also directing a separate company that supports retreats and draws on our intimate knowledge of the area and community to create and often lead ourselves experiential adventure holidays that draw their energy from the cultural, recreational, and culinary landscapes now in our backyard.

A perfect location in Western Crete

Villa Koukouvayia is ideally situated between the tranquil rural villages of Crete and the vibrant amenities of the island's larger towns. Enveloped by the sounds of church bells and rooster calls, the villa is a short walk from the bustling farming village of Kaloudiana, which features excellent tavernas, a modern café, a traditional kafenio, grocery stores, a gift shop, and a bus stop that connects the entire island.

Three kilometers west lies Kissamos, a year-round agricultural town rich in history with Roman baths, Venetian fountains, and Minoan foundations. Despite its robust tourist infrastructure of cafés, restaurants, and beaches, Kissamos retains its authentic character, primarily focused on olive harvesting.

Positioned on the foothills of Crete's northern shore, Villa Koukouvayia is near the renowned beaches yet distant enough from the crowded waterfront to enjoy peace. With the Aegean Sea in front, mountains behind, and the Tyflos River Valley beside, the villa offers an ideal spot to appreciate Crete's natural beauty, undisturbed.

A short drive or bus ride away is Chania, a historic city offering shops, museums, theaters, a harbor lined with cafés, and an Old Town with cobbled alleys. Nearby natural attractions include the white-sand lagoons of Balos and Elafonisi, the pink sands of Phalasarna, and the dramatic Samaria Gorge

While Villa Koukouvayia offers a charming retreat, it is also conveniently accessible. Major transport hubs are just 45 minutes away. Kissamos has a 24/7 emergency clinic, while Chania provides excellent healthcare facilities. Despite the rural setting, locals are welcoming and accommodating, often speaking enough English to assist visitors.

The villa's location, surrounded by stunning landscapes and year-round recreational opportunities, offers an authentic cultural experience, inviting families and friends to explore the heart of Crete just beyond its gates.
