Standard, Premium, & Luxury Accommodation Options at
Villa Koukouvayia

“The old queen went to the bedroom, took the bedding off the bedstead, and set a single pea below twenty eider-down mattresses. ‘Now we’ll find out if this is a real princess!’ the old queen then exclaimed”― Hans Christian Anderson

Whether planning a program for others or viewing this page as a participant choosing your personal lodging preferences, you will be pleased to discover that Villa Koukouvayia’s bedrooms meet a variety of desires and budgets.

The retreat center was envisioned & designed as a home, not a hotel, and the result is that her various bedrooms are as unique as the estate itself.  While all rooms have full & luxurious adult bedding, climate controls & A/C, and represent beautiful additions within a beautiful estate, they are not “hotel” rooms with identical size, parallel locations, or common views.  Furthermore, almost half of Villa Koukouvayia’s bedrooms are flexibly configured, with high-quality wall-beds needing only the flip of a handle to convert from queen-bed accommodations for a couple or lone participant into single-bedding suites comfortably lodging up to four adults.

And while each retreat leveraging this flexibility may use its online prospectus to describe different selection & price options, most programs simply authorize candidates to use the table below and create—via lodging-level and room-sharing choices—a final price that matches the participant’s budget.

As you review those options, you’ll see that the villa’s rooms are listed within two primary categories:

  • Standard
  • Premium

And then, to address three particularly unique rooms whose luxury rises beyond typical Premium rooms or whose features lack a characteristic common to Standard rooms, we add two more categories:

  • Luxury
  • Non-Standard

Although your retreat may offer its own plan, it’s easy to describe your bedroom options according to these four types, starting below with the villa’s three Standard rooms.

Standard Rooms

Like all Villa Koukouvayia Rooms, Standard rooms are beautifully appointed and comfortable, and only differ from their Premium cousins by lacking some dramatic feature like a private balcony, upper view, and/or larger size. The Garden Suite’s Pheasant Nest & Partridge Nest, and the Guest House’s Crow’s Nest (which does have a beautiful balcony & view but offers only single bedding) are all considered Standard rooms.

Pheasant Nest

The Pheasant Nest is the Garden Suite bedroom with the largest floorplan.  Her wide windows look out into the quiet vista of our southeast olive groves, and her built-in cabinet-beds can be deployed in a simple queen-bed configuration or in an albergue style with four single-beds set up as two bunks.  In fact the Pheasant Nest’s size lets both style beds be deployed at the same time, allowing one or two children accompanying a participant or participating couple to lodge in the same room and avoid costing the program the extra room.

Partridge Nest

Adjacent and similar to the Pheasant Nest, the  Partridge Nest also looks into the southeast groves, but adds a row of high glass-brick and a skylight to keep the room both private and bright.  Like all Garden Suite bedrooms, her cabinet beds include a queen that allows the room to serve as private quarters for a lone participant or couple, or can deploy its series of single beds to lodge as many as three  participating colleagues or friends.  Unlike other Garden Suite bedrooms, the Partridge Nest’s single-bed cabinet provides an automatically deployed desk and work area when the bed is closed and hidden, a handy feature for participants who need to remain in touch with professional responsibilities during a program.

Crow’s Nest

The Crow’s Nest earns her name from the way her two single beds, engineered into window casements as wide as the beds are long, provide fantastic views from pillows to sea.  Like a ship’s quarters, the Crow’s Nest custom cabinetry includes a host of storage options that join the room’s large closets and increase her effective size.  Adding to her space, a large French door opens out onto a lovely coffee or reading balcony for two, with a view of the Tyflos Valley, the village of Potamida, and southern mountains beyond.  The Crow’s Nest is a perfect choice for a lone participant or two participants joining a program together.

Premium Rooms

Villa Koukouvayia’s Premium rooms each have features that many participants will find particularly attractive.  These features usually include extra size, private exterior balconies or terraces, or extra chambers within a suite.  For reasons described below, the Guest House’s Hawk’s Nest, and the Main House’s Falcon’s & Griffon’s Nests are all considered Premium rooms.

Hawk’s Nest

The Hawk’s Nest is the Guest House’s master bedroom.  Large built-in closets allow guests to settle in quickly and feel immediately at home.  The room’s luxurious queen-bed is set among wide windows, and the room’s sliding French doors lead to a large, elevated terrace.  Whether you remain in bed reading or sit on the terrace sipping coffee or wine, you’ll enjoy a dramatic, 27o-degree view of the Gramvousa & Rodopou mountain ranges as they frame the Gulf of Kissamos and plunge into the Cretan Sea.  The Hawk’s Nest also boasts private access by spiral stairs to the Guest House’s roof terrace, where your 270-degree view will expand to a full 360-degrees.  During daylight hours, scan the region’s domain from mountains to sea.  Or, after midnight, climb the patio’s spiral stairs to survey the rare spectacle of the sky’s full catalog of constellations and stars.

Falcon's Nest

The Falcon’s Nest balances its smaller footprint with expansive views up the Tyflos Valley to Crete’s southern mountains, either from the large private balcony embracing the southeast and southwest sides of the Main House, or directly from the room’s antique maple bed through a pair of French balcony doors.  With the balcony available for morning coffees or evening glasses of wine, this is a perfect room for a participating couple or lone participant who wants to balance time with the larger group against moments where they alone can enjoy the moon’s or sun’s rise.

Griffon's Nest

The Griffon’s Nest is a two-level chamber resting within the Main House’s dramatic hand-hewn stone turret.  At both levels its southwest view is dramatic, falling across an expanse of olive groves to where the cliffs of Gramvousa Peninsula plunge into the Aegean Sea.  With a bespoke single bed built into the upper loft’s circle of windows, and a wide custom writing desk embraced by the windows in the studio below, the room offers the height, views and seclusion preferred by the cliff-dwelling bird after which it is named.  The Griffon’s Nest also has direct access to the Main House’s roof terrace, a perfect place to go before the rest of the house wakes or after all are abed, when the morning light or stars will sparkle and call.  The studio level also provides the space and privacy to add a portable bed and double the room’s occupancy—perfect for two participating friends who want to take advantage of a premium room and still enjoy a room-sharing discount.

Non-Standard Rooms

Villa Koukouvayia’s Garden Suite has two additional accommodations that are perfect for certain guest assignments but lack some feature included in every Standard room.  The Swallow’s Nest, while matching its sisters the Pheasant & Partridge Nests in features and bedding options, lacks a view of any kind.  And the Chaperone Quarters, while spacious, with garden views and an adjacent bath, is semi rather than fully private.

Swallow’s Nest

The Garden Suite’s third bedroom, the Swallow’s Nest, boasts the same high-quality bedding, climate control, and appointments as all villa bedrooms.  A networked office alcove provides a handy connection for professionals with responsibilities during their stay, while built-in lighted closets and stone features provide this cozy room with a special warmth and charm.  While it lacks the view of other villa bedrooms, this feature also makes the Swallow’s Nest a perfect option for program participants staying within a strict budget, or for staff.  Like all bedrooms in the Garden Suite residence, the Swallow’s Nest can easily switch from a queen-bed configuration for a lone guest or guest-couple, into a true albergue suite comfortably sleeping up to four.  And for programs needing a private space for specific practice like massage or private counselling, the Swallow’s Nest is ideal.  Just close the beds into their cabinets, and the room and its floor space become a multi-purpose area.

Chaperone Nest

In addition to the three fully private bedrooms in the Garden Suite, the suite’s living area hides an adult-engineered bed built into the room’s library.  Deploying this bed converts the living area—either each evening or for the duration of your program—into the Chaperone’s Nest.  The Chaperone Nest is easily separated from the rest of the suite by an available privacy screen, which effectively makes its adjacent bath en suite.  And while this room would be a rare choice and not likely offered to formal program participants, it is a great option for staff or—if a youth group—for a chaperone or chaperone couple.

Luxury Accommodations

The retreat center does offer one selection, the Koukouvayia Suite, whose size & luxurious features demand its own category, distinct from even the Premium Rooms cited above.

Koukouvayia Suite

The Koukouvayia Suite features a dedicated library and reading area, a hand-carved, Arabian teak king-bed, and for winter holiday events during Crete’s colder months an active, hand-hewn stone fireplace.  The bedchambers are quiet and isolated from the other 2nd floor rooms by a long entry hallway.  The suite boasts a series of high windows, with sliding French doors that access a wide private balcony wrapping across two sides of the Main House.  Both inside and out, the suite affords dramatic 270-degree views of the Gramvousa & Rodopou mountain ranges projecting north into the Cretan Sea.  The en suite bath continues the motif of simple luxury & integrated natural views.  Across from a two-person glass shower, a long soaking tub is set into a wide window whose view encompasses the Tyflos Valley and the mountain opposite, where the charming village of Xarathiana and its night-lit chapel of Saint John frame the moon and sun rising at dusk and dawn.  While the Koukouvayia Suite is perfect for an attending couple, when a single participant simply must have such luxury to themselves, it becomes an attractive feature option for program attendance.

Room Choice Supplements & Discounts

Use the table below to calculate the effect of room-type and room-sharing on your final price.  Simply go down the room column to your choice, then across that row to your room-share preference, multiply the supplement or discount by your program’s number of nights, and then adjust the program’s base price by adding or subtracting for your final costs.

Notes for Participants Making Room Selections:

  • The Koukouvayia Suite is often reserved for Facilitation/Leadership Staff.  Check to make sure it is available for your retreat before selecting it.
  • Once confirmed, your selected room-type is guaranteed, but we may change your specific room within that type (and/or upgrade you at no charge to a higher type 😊) to best match program attendance.
• As sign-ups occur, rooms are taken on a first-come, first-served basis.  To avoid the delays needed to inform you that your primary choice/s are no longer available and discover your next choice/s, during your registration please list in order of preference all lodging choices (both room and room-sharing options) you would accept to attend your chosen retreat.  We will of course do our best to ensure your choices are met in the order you’ve described.  Once available options go beyond your preference list, however, we will assume that you would not attend the retreat given the remaining lodging options; so make sure you do include all choices you would accept in order to attend.
